BIOGRAPHY

Mike Bruno is a singer-songwriter and abstract sound crafter based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (hautemagie.com).

The Black Magic Family Band is his most active creative vessel, wherein an indeterminate number of accompanying musicians provide choir-like harmonies and psychedelic atmospheres to otherwise skeletal acoustic song structures.

Solo side-projects include Moss Graves and Ginny Greenteeth

"In the Shade" Review: (MARMARA RECORDS)
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Is there such a thing as psychedelic flute?

Mike Bruno + the Black Magic Family Band make a good case for the existence of such an instrument on their newest -- "In The Shade" -- out this December from upstart Marmara Records (their debut release). Three creeped-out and broody tracks place you somewhere between a weird wood and sullen English moor looking for a hit of acid and/or a cup of tea.

The title track is a lilting little number punctuated by Bruno's piercing vibrato, a bright (if not brief) spot among all the gloom, and the Band provides the back-drop -- a subtle swathe of barely audible, distorted percussion and noise.

After the first track, the Band seemingly takes center stage. Bruno's vocals disappear, and the guitar-driven opener gives way to "White Wands for Morgan," where the aforementioned psychedelic flute twinkles away and a keyboard shrieks and bleeds out in the background.

The droning and discordant B-side stretches on for five plus minutes and showcases Mike Bruno + the Black Magic Family Band's aptitude for under-stated noise. The normal cacophony imagined in a family-band-type gathering is totally absent, and is instead replaced by faint hints of wind chimes or perhaps an obscure woodwind here and there. Where we'd usually hear a stable of guitars grinding through a slew of rambling Americana-laced tracks, we instead are given some dudes tooting a flute, banging drums and other sonically subversive activities around a campfire and that is totally OK.

"The Sad Sisters" Review:
-------------------------------------------------------------------

"Mike Bruno sets himself apart going down the hidden folk avenues on the Indie map with his latest EP The Sad Sisters. Bruno’s voice is tormented and moving leaving you at the edge of your comfort zone. Dark and mysterious harmonies have you unsettled and calm simultaneously. Along with an acoustic guitar, a symphony of wineglass’s, bells, drones, and a banjo fuel the infectious cooing. Mike Bruno exerts raw emotion that is felt through every delicate pluck and whisper, to every coarse wail and strums. The tracks change dynamically leaving you anticipating what soothing or evocative sound will capture by surprise. The EP is hypnotic in its own sense with the unusual instrumentation. Mike Bruno leaves you lost in your tracks in the place you know best." ~ treble-synthesis.blogspot.com
