BIOGRAPHY
Bird Call's newest release "Ballad Of New York" is the first song from the artist's full length record, to be released in spring 2012. Bird Call, aka Chiara Angelicola, recently finished a national tour in August 2011, which was funded in great part by a Kickstarter campaign, raising the artist over $6,500. Bird Call is also a Google Music Indie Artist Spokesperson, promoting the launch of the new Google Music cloud, geared towards the independent artist.
In the past year, Angelicola has released two digital EPs. Other Creatures (released May 24th, 2011 FHC Records), a digital EP of cover songs, is the work of Angelicola and famed producer Joel Hamilton, who previously worked with Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, and The Black Keys. Since its release, iTunes USA has featured the record on it's Singer/Songwriter homepage as "New and Noteworthy" for 8 consecutive weeks. Other Creatures is yet another display of the artist at her most sincere, creative, and endearing. The EP features covers of Beck (featuring Dave Smallen), Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and Man Man, who's frontman Honus Honus personally extended his liking of Bird's version of "Doo Right". This is Bird’s second collaboration with Hamilton, having previously released The Animals Know EP in October 2010 (FHC Records).
Born in a small, hippie suburb of San Francisco, Chiara, half Guatemalan and half Italian, grew up listening in on her mother’s bossa nova band rehearsals and taking the stage in front of the fireplace to entertain her parents’ guests through her plastic microphone. Up until her venture to New York in 2009, Chiara stirred the music scene of the Bay Area with her haunting and nostalgic vocal performances. Amoeba Records titled her as an “Artist of the Month” while also placing #16 out of hundreds for MTV2’s Bay Area Break Out Artist.
Both The Animals Know and Other Creatures have garnered Angelicola an official showcase at this year's CMJ festival, regular rotation on national favorites such as KCRW, KEXP, and WNYC, and a LA Music Award nomination for Hot Adult Contemporary Album. Bird Call also recently won First Place in the Performance Category of the 2010 International Songwriting Competition for her song "Waltz in the Snow", judged by Tom Waits, Peter Gabriel, and others. Following an opening slot for The Tallest Man on Earth at the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco, Angelicola also managed to perk the interest of The Deli NYC, who’s editors nominated her as the #1 Emerging Artist of 2010. With an average of 400 digital downloads a month on iTunes alone, Bird Call continues to glisten as an independent artist in the music world.
