Bach [ Play ]		BIOGRAPHY Ummagma is a Canadian-Ukrainian duo comprised of Alexx Kretov (composition, instruments, arrangement, recording, vocals) and Shauna McLarnon (vocals, composition, lyrics). For Alexx, making music began in childhood and recording began with a double-deck recorder, guitar, pedals and drum machine in the new post-Soviet era. Shauna’s experience in creating music began with acappella compositions in her university years and travels to Russia. This joint project began for Alexx and Shauna as an affair with love and sound in Moscow back in 2003. Ummagma’s musical style is vacillating and broadly-influenced “easy positive music”, ranging from intense 3-minute songs to lengthy richly-layered soothing landscapes of pulsating sound. It offers a mix of the ethereal, ambient and sublime resonance. Shauna writes songs and sings, while Alexx co-authors those songs and handles arrangements, plays all instruments, and even records the music, which turns out rather well. The end product is, at the same time, both energetic and meditative music, characterized by strong ethnic influences and shaped by the experience of northern European music from the past thirty years, from Peter Gabriel to Sigur Ros. But here we are talking about actual experience, not about copy-catting or borrowing of any kind.
